What is phlebectomy?

Phlebectomy is a treatment for removing large, prominent varicose veins that extracts the veins through small incisions in your skin.

Before the development of minimally invasive phlebectomy techniques, vascular surgeons had to remove large varicose veins by stripping them out of your legs. This procedure could be painful and cause a degree of scarring.

Phlebectomy is faster, safer, requires significantly less downtime, and causes virtually no scarring. It’s also far less painful than surgical stripping.

Why might I need to undergo a phlebectomy procedure?

Phlebectomy might be necessary if you have varicose veins that are too large to treat effectively using other means.

Varicose veins are twisting blue, purple, or red blood vessels that show through your skin. Severe varicose veins also bulge above the skin. They develop primarily because of a condition called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

If you have CVI, the one-way flow of blood back to your heart isn’t functioning as it should. As a result, the blood in your legs starts pooling, forming unsightly varicose veins.

The Surgical Care East, PLLC team can use techniques like sclerotherapy and endovenous ablation to treat many types of varicose veins, whether for cosmetic or medical purposes.

Sclerotherapy uses a chemical solution, while endovenous ablation uses laser or radiofrequency energy to close off your varicose veins. The treated veins eventually disappear.

However, if your varicose veins are severe, phlebectomy might be a better option.

What happens during the phlebectomy procedure?

The Surgical Care East, PLLC team performs phlebectomy procedures on an outpatient basis at a surgery center.

Once you’re comfortable, Dr. Resetarits injects a local anesthetic such as lidocaine into the skin around the varicose vein. When your skin is numb, he makes tiny incisions in your skin close to the vein, then carefully pulls the diseased section of the vein out through the cuts.

Once the procedure is complete, you can go home. It’s sensible to take it easy on your legs for a few days, but you shouldn’t feel much discomfort and can soon resume normal activities.
