What conditions cause leg pain?

Leg pain is often a symptom of vascular disorders — problems with the veins and arteries that often result in centralized pain on the veins in your legs. Common causes of vascular leg pain include:

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)

CVI is a condition that causes varicose veins to appear on your legs. These large, unsightly veins form when the valves in your leg veins stop working properly.

The valves keep blood flowing back to your heart, so when they don’t make an effective seal, blood can leak backward and form pools. The result is swollen, twisted varicose veins.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD)

PAD develops when the arteries in your legs start to narrow and harden. Narrowing occurs because of a buildup of cholesterol in your blood that forms plaque — a sticky substance that coats the inner walls of your arteries.

As well as causing claudication (leg pain when walking), PAD increases your risk of stroke and heart attack.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

A DVT is a blood clot in a deep vein, most often affecting the legs. DVT can cause considerable leg pain in some people and may have potentially life-threatening consequences.

The danger is that a clot could break away and travel to a major organ such as the lungs, which could then lead to a pulmonary embolism.

As well as leg pain, these conditions often cause leg swelling, too. This can be a result of inflammation in the tissues or a buildup of fluid (edema) from leaking veins.

How is leg pain diagnosed?

Correct diagnosis of the cause of your leg pain is vital, as the effectiveness of any treatment depends on identifying the root cause of your discomfort.

Dr. Resetarits begins by conducting a physical examination and reviewing your personal and family medical history. He then examines your legs, looking for swelling and tenderness and symptoms such as varicose veins.

Dr. Resetarits might want to assess how well your blood is flowing through the blood vessels in your legs as well. Imaging tests like a Doppler ultrasound or an angiogram can provide detailed information about blood flow, narrowing of the arteries, and clots.

How is leg pain treated?

There are various treatments available for addressing leg pain and swelling, which differ according to the cause of your condition.

If your leg pain is due to varicose veins, Dr. Resetarits can perform several procedures to destroy or remove the diseased veins, including:

  • Asclera® sclerotherapy
  • VenaSeal™ vein closure system
  • ClosureFast™ endovenous radiofrequency ablation
  • Microhook ambulatory phlebectomy

A DVT is likely to require blood-thinning medication, while pad can be treated with minimally invasive vascular procedures.
